Dubai residency: the routes and what each one costs

Every residence visa in the UAE dies the same way. Live outside the country for more than 180 continuous days and it is nullified automatically — no notice, no letter, and a new entry permit needed to come back. What differs between the routes is how long the visa runs, who has to sponsor it, and whether that 180-day rule applies to you at all.

One, two, three — or five and ten

Validity follows the type and the sponsor. A sponsored visa runs one, two or three years. An unsponsored one runs up to five or ten. A dependent's visa never expires later than the sponsor's, which is the quiet constraint behind every family calculation: the family's dates are the sponsor's dates.

Above 18, a residence visa means a medical fitness test, a security check and an Emirates ID from the ICP. That is the floor, and it is the same floor whichever route brought you.

The 180 days, and who is outside them

The general rule nullifies a residence visa after more than 180 continuous days abroad. The published exemptions are specific rather than general: the foreign wife of an Emirati citizen; residents sent abroad for treatment with an approved medical report; public sector employees sent for training or posted to an employer's office abroad, with their families; students enrolled in institutions abroad; investors holding valid residence visas; residents sponsored by UAE diplomatic representatives; and domestic helpers in several named situations.

Anyone who has already fallen foul of it applies for an entry permit from outside the country, after the 180 days, with a reason — and pays AED 100 for every 30 days or less spent away. The approval then has to be used within 30 days. The service is not for residents of Dubai, and holders of Golden and Green residency do not need it: their residency lets them enter directly for as long as it is valid.

Overstay fines were standardised by the ICP at AED 50 a day across visit, tourist and residence visas — double the previous AED 25 for a residence overstay. The visa's expiry is also the Emirates ID's expiry, so the document you would reach for to prove anything expires at the same moment.

Beyond the usual routes

Two long-term visas exist for reasons that have nothing to do with salary or property. The Blue visa is a ten-year residence visa for people who have made an exceptional contribution to environmental protection and sustainability, inside or outside the UAE — granted to Emiratis and residents alike, by application to the ICP or by nomination from a competent authority. The Green visa covers skilled workers, freelancers and the self-employed, and its holders may sponsor first-degree relatives.

How long is a UAE residence visa valid?

It depends on the type and the sponsor: one, two or three years on a sponsored visa, and up to five or ten years on an unsponsored one. A dependent's visa never outlasts the sponsor's.

What happens if I leave the UAE for a long stretch?

The general rule is that living outside the country for more than 180 continuous days nullifies the residence visa automatically, and a new entry permit is then needed. There is a list of exemptions, and Golden and Green residency holders are outside the rule entirely.

Is there a fine for overstaying?

AED 50 a day, standardised by the ICP across visit, tourist and residence visas. It was AED 25 for residence overstays before the change.

Who renews a residence visa?

The sponsor, before it expires. Residents are given flexible grace periods of up to six months, by category, to stay in the country after a permit is cancelled or expires — and when the visa expires so does the Emirates ID.

Can I cancel my own visa?

Normally not. Only the sponsor can, either through an ICP-registered typing centre or online through the ICP website or app. Anyone sponsoring dependents must cancel theirs before cancelling their own.
